Marlins are on the way to making the worst kind of history

After eight games played this season, the Miami Marlins are still winless, putting them on the path to making the type of history for which nobody wants to be remembered.

The worst losing streak to start a year by any National League club is 14 games, a dubious distinction earned by the 1997 Chicago Cubs. After the Marlins' seventh loss, they broke the record for the worst start to a season after making the playoffs in the previous season, but could they keep rewriting the history books and pass Chicago's unwanted record?

The Marlins have two more games to play against the St. Louis Cardinals, both of which are against solid starting arms, Steven Matz and Kyle Gibson. If they're not able to snap their losing streak in either of those matchups, they could be in real trouble. Their next three games are in New York against the Yankees, who currently sit atop the American League with a 6-1 record despite a very tough opening schedule, and a sweep in the Bronx would run the streak to 13 games.

Things arguably only get worse after that road trip- even though the Marlins get to go home next, it's only to face the Atlanta Braves, perhaps the most well-rounded team in the majors. The Marlins wouldn't even need to get swept in that series to hold the record, should their losing streak still be intact when it starts- they'd only need to lose the first two games.

Of course, this whole saga could be over by the end of the day, or it could end in the history books, so we'll have to stay tuned and see what the "fish" can do over their next few contests.
